What’s In The Bag: The 10 Most Popular WITBs of 2016
Our WITB (What’s In The Bag) section allows golf equipment fans to see the exact golf clubs the pros are playing: everything from their weight settings, shafts, specs to their lead tape placement.
Below are the 10 most popular WITBs of 2016 based on view count. Players likely made this list for various reasons, whether it was the anticipation of what clubs Tiger Woods would change for his comeback, the unique quality of Bryson DeChambeau’s equipment setup or what driver Dustin Johnson uses to hit his tee shots so ridiculously far.
A HUGE thanks to our PGA Tour photographer Greg Moore (pga43 in the forums) and all of the travel he endures to bring you the best photos of Tour equipment in existence. If it wasn’t for him, none of this would be possible.
Note: WITBs are accurate as of the date indicated within the individual posts.
10) Patrick Reed
Patrick Reed, the hero of the winning 2016 U.S. Ryder Cup team, shows pride in Team USA every week of the PGA Tour season with his patriotic Callaway wedges. He took down Europe’s top player, Rory McIlroy, in dramatic fashion during the 2016 Ryder Cup matches en route to a team victory, and recorded an individual victory at the 2016 Barclays as well. It was a big year for the 26-year-old golfer who once proclaimed himself a top-5 player in the world… and he’s currently ranked No. 8 in the Official World Golf Rankings.
9) Sergio Garcia
On the other side of the Ryder Cup matches was Sergio Garcia, who continues to be one of the world’s most popular golfers. Currently ranked No. 13 in the OWGR, Garcia beat out Brooks Koepka in a playoff for the 2016 AT&T Byron Nelson title. He also finished second at the 2016 Honda Classic and T5 in the 2016 U.S. Open. Garcia continues to chase the elusive first major victory, but his relevance on the PGA Tour (and among GolfWRX readers) remains at an all-time high.
8) Tiger Woods
Tiger Woods’ WITB was possibly the most anticipated post on GolfWRX… ever. After Nike announced its exit from the golf industry, speculation was rampant on what clubs Woods would have in the bag for his return. A pump fake tournament entry at the 2016 Safeway Classic only added to the anticipation.
His WITB was posted in December when he finally made his competitive return, and has already become one of the most popular WITB articles of the year in under a month’s span. Still don’t think TW still moves the needle? Think again.
7) Adam Scott
Adam Scott, currently ranked No. 7 in the OWGR, recorded back-to-back victories at the 2016 Honda Classic and the WGC-Cadillac Championship, and it seemed he was poised to reel off a year to remember. He didn’t win another PGA Tour event in 2016, but ended the year strong finishing T4-4-T4-T8 respectively in the FedExCup Playoffs. Scott has always had a propensity to switch flat sticks, meaning his WITB is ever-changing and always interesting to check out.
6) Phil Mickelson
The king of lead tape, and one of the game’s most popular golfers of all time. Mickelson is always tinkering with different setups, lead tape placements and isn’t afraid to take risks with his golf clubs in order to save a few strokes.
Now ranked No. 19 in the OWGR, Mickelson failed to record a victory in 2016, but he did finish solo-second at the Open Championship. He lost to Henrik Stenson by three strokes, but Mickelson was 11 strokes separated from third place (thanks in part to an opening round 63) and an 18th hole lip out away from the all-time low major championship round.
5) Bryson DeChambeau
Bryson DeChambeau — the 2015 U.S. Amateur and NCAA Men’s Individual Champion who’s since turned professional — is best known for his unique irons, which all have the same exact lengths, lie angles, shafts and head weights. He’s the resident mad scientist in golf, and has even experimented recently using a side-saddle putting stroke. If you haven’t checked out his 2016 WITB yet, it’s well worth the look. There’s no other bag setup quite like it.
4) Henrik Stenson
Henrik Stenson won the 2016 Open Championship after four rounds in the 60’s, including a final-round 63. He also finished second to Justin Rose in the 2016 Men’s Olympic Golf competition. Despite a relatively quiet season, Stenson holds steady at No. 4 in the world, and had one of the most-viewed WITBs of the year with his uniquely out-dated irons and 3 wood.
3) Jason Day
Jason Day, the world’s No. 1-ranked golfer, won three times in 2016 and finished second at the 2016 PGA Championship. It was another successful year for Day, but it was his prototype Spider Tour Red putter that was a big hit among GolfWRX readers; so much so that TaylorMade ended up launching a replica for the masses. We don’t want to say our readers bullied TaylorMade into releasing the the putter to the masses, but we can’t say they didn’t either.
2) Rory McIlroy
McIlroy had a quiet 2016 season… that is until he won both the Deutsche Bank and Tour Championships to take home the 2016 FedExCup Playoff trophy and a $10 million bonus. He also caught the eye of GolfWRX readers when he switched from a Nike driver to a TaylorMade M2 following the news of Nike’s exit from hard goods. Winning a bunch and changing equipment is a good way to have a popular WITB. That’s a fact.
1) Dustin Johnson
Who doesn’t want to see what’s in the bag of one of the most freakish athletes on the PGA Tour, who averages more than 180 mph of ball speed off the tee? Johnson also won the 2016 U.S. Open at Oakmont amidst yet another rules controversy to throw the major monkey off his back in respectable and spectacular fashion. He also won the WGC-Bridgestone and BMW Championship, and sits at No. 3 in the OWGR. Surely more important to him, however, was having the most popular WITB on GolfWRX in 2016.
