Justin Thomas changes putters between rounds at WM Phoenix Open
Between the first and second rounds of the WM Phoenix Open, PGA Tour star Justin Thomas made a putter switch.
Poor putting has been Thomas’ Achilles’ heel since his last win at the 2022 PGA Championship at Southern Hills, and it was more of the same to begin his week at TPC Scottsdale.
In the first round, Thomas lost 1.09 strokes putting, which was ranked 99th in the field. However, in the second round, JT bounced back with the new putter, gaining 2.02 strokes putting.
Thomas had begun the event with a new Scotty Cameron T-5 putter but reverted to his Scotty Cameron X5 flatstick.
After the round, Thomas spoke to the media about the switch.
“I hit like three 6-irons and one or two drivers. I hit more putts than anything, because like I said, that’s what I felt like held me back this morning. Actually, I used a different — a very similar style but a different putter the first round and then switched in between rounds.
“The putter I went back to the second round is my gamer, the one I’ve used for a long time and had a lot of success with. The one that I used this morning was just the new model of it.
“I had no intention of using it, but honestly my putter felt so bad the first couple days this week, after Pebble last week, that I just — I was putting with it, and it felt good. My speed was good with it. I was starting it on line. I wept with it. I felt like I had a lot better chance of making putts with that than the other one. I have full faith I would have putted the same with the other putter, but there’s something about using something you’re comfortable with.”
Thomas ended up finishing in a tie for 11th.

‘Shut up!’ – Zach Johnson and Billy Horschel clash with fans at WM Phoenix Open
Plenty of players playing in the Waste Management Phoenix Open seemed absolutely fed up with the rowdy atmosphere at TPC Scottsdale over the weekend.
Zach Johnson also told a fan to “shut up” and was extremely angry, which is out of character for the 2023 Ryder Cup captain.

Billy Horschel, who also had enough of the fans, went back at a patron who talked during his playing partner’s backswing.
ZJ wasn’t the only one fed up with the WMPO gallery.

“Buddy, when he’s over a shot, shut the hell up man!” Horschel said.
The Waste Management Phoenix Open is typically a bright spot on the PGA Tour schedule but it’s fair to wonder if the party atmosphere of the event needs to be scaled back.

PGA Tour pro labels WM Phoenix Open a ‘sh*tshow’ that is ‘totally out of control on every hole’
The Waste Management Phoenix Open always generates a raucous atmosphere with fans with a fan environment you don’t typically see at a professional golf tournament.
According to some golfers, including Byeong Hun An, the 2024 edition of the event has been even more rowdy than usual.

An said it was a “sh*tshow” and “totally out of control”.
During the third round of the event, the gates had to be closed and alcohol sales were shut down due to the size of the crowd and the number of drinks consumed.
At one point, a fight even broke out between fans on the grounds.

The event is typically viewed as one of the most entertaining on the schedule, but it’s fair to wonder if the chaos has gone a bit too far at this point.

Paige Spiranac apologizes for taking ‘ricochet shot’ at fellow influencer after being ‘triggered’ by Margot Robbie insult
While participating in a “back off challenge” with the hosts of the Country Club Adjacent podcast, social media influencer Paige Spiranac faced a series of insults which were designed to make her back off the shot.
At one point, someone said to Paige, “It’s crazy how far Margot Robbie really fell off,” followed by “I guess they couldn’t afford Claire Hogle” (Hogle is another social media golf influencer).
The 30-year-old’s response? “She has like, what, 3m followers less than me?!”

Spiranac took to Instagram to apologize for the comment to Claire.
“Hand up I’m sorry for the ricochet shot at Claire.”
“I was rattled after the Margot Robbie comment lol we all know two blondes are better than one especially when they look like Claire and play lights out!”
